-          This URL is being placed to give pros and cons of electronic communications

Module 2 Definitions

1.  Open learning - is an innovative movement in education that emerged in the 1970s and evolved into fields of practice and study. The term refers generally to activities that either enhance learning opportunities within formal education systems or broaden learning opportunities beyond formal education systems. Open learning involves but is not limited to: classroom teaching methods, approaches to interactive learning, formats in work-related education and training, the cultures and ecologies of learning communities, and the development and use of open educational resources

2.  Virtual - generated by computer: simulated by a computer for reasons of economics, convenience, or performance

3.  Virtual Schools -   describes an institution that teaches courses entirely or primarily through online methods. It has been suggested that a virtual school is an online learning platform offered by an educational organization whereby individuals can earn credits in the particular area of interest which can be counted toward graduation or advancement to the next grade.

4.  Guided Didactic Conversation - A theory postulated by Holmberg (1988) who views distance education as the “conversation-like interaction between the student on the one hand and the tutor/counselor of the supporting organization administering the study on the other”

5.  Correspondence Study - A correspondence course is an academic class that is taken — and taught — across some geographical distance. The original correspondence courses were carried out through the postal service. Professors would mail assignments and lecture notes to students, who would return essays and projects for grading. Most correspondence courses today take place over the Internet, but the concept is the same: students anywhere can take classes without having to physically be present at the school.

6.  Electronic Communications - The term electronic communication is defined as passing of information from one individual to another using computers, fax and phones. A good example of a form of electronic communication is the use of email.

7.  Andragogy - is the process of helping adults learn.

8.  Fordism - is a notion of a modern economic and social system based on an industrialized and standardized form of mass production. The concept is used in various social theories and management studies about production and related socio-economic phenomena. It is also related to the idea of mass consumption and changes of working condition of workers over time.

9.  Conventional Education - more traditional, assessment tools evaluate what skills students can perform with success. They are generally knowledge-based, versus hands-on or performance-based. They include traditional types of tests like multiple-choice, short answer essays or constructed responses, and standardized tests such as those districts administer to all students.

10. Independent Study - Independent study is when you are taking a class or studying on your own. There is no set time to study, just as long as you get the work done when it is required.

Module 1 Definitions

 1. Distance Education - Distance learning, sometimes called e-learning, is a formalized teaching    and learning system specifically designed to be carried out remotely by using electronic communication.

 2. Telemedicine – Refers to medicine at a distance

 3. Internet Protocol (IP) - the rules used to send information over the Internet.

The Internet is a packet-switched network, meaning that messages are divided

into packets that are disassembled and then sent to the distant site where the

packets are reassembled into the complete message.

  4. Remote Consultationis the most common telemedicine application and what most

refer to when they use the term telemedicine. This application implies one health

care provider seeking the advice of a professional colleague or subspecialist to

             resolve a patient’s problem.

  5. Remote Monitoring – Is a longstanding application where the most common use is to      access a patient’s vital signs at a distance using telecommunications technologies

 6. Remote Education – is increasingly important as the geographically concentrated expertise of a medical unit is redistributed to isolated practice professionals and professionals in training.

 7. Telementoring - Telementoring is a process that combines the proven practice of mentoring with the speed and ease of electronic communication, enabling busy professionals to make significant contributions to the academic lives of students.

 8. Synchronous Distance Learning - refers to a learning environment in which everyone takes part at the same time. Lecture is an example of synchronous learning in a face-to-face environment, where learners and teachers are all in the same place at the same time.

 9. Asynchronous Distance Education - is a student-centered teaching method that uses online learning resources to facilitate information sharing outside the constraints of time and place among a network of people.  Asynchronous learning is based on constructivist theory, a student-centered approach that emphasizes the importance of peer-to-peer interactions. This approach combines self-study with asynchronous interactions to promote learning, and it can be used to facilitate learning in traditional on-campus education, distance education, and continuing education. This combined network of learners and the electronic network in which they communicate are referred to as an asynchronous learning network.

10.  Telelaw – Refers to law at a distance

Positive Comments

Write three “positive” comments related to each site. Post your reflections with the URL that you are reflection to your “Distance Education Technologies” blog.

1. Core Subjects are important to NO Child Left Behind, it challenges policy maker to focus pass basic learning

2.  Students need to know more than the core subjects

3.  Technology will continue to be the 21st century driving force in the workplace, communities and personal lives.

4.4

Today's students' are unlike any other student in history; they have access to more information than any generation in history, yet they are underperforming. Wait...what? Underperforming! In the most affluent country on the planet? The numbers are shocking, but they're real. How did this happen in America?

This is differently true.  Student did not have what student have access to now and student did much better.  Now the students have access to so much information and they are still under performance.  I am not sure as to why, but it’s not because they don’t have access to information.  I began to wonder if it’s the teacher or teacher delivers methods.
Write  two paragraph summary on the “pros” and  “cons” (on the sites listed below) on your “Distance Education Technologies” Blog.

Well, if we need one good PRO for this website as to why to use technology in the classroom,   we work on technology at school on a monthly basis and I believe this would be an excellent resource to introduce to my colleagues during one of these meetings.  The website gives scenario of the 20th century versus the 21st century classroom.  Also, the website explains that technology is the tool that students use to create knowledge and to create personal and social change which is so true.
The website explains the importance of the need for technology in the classroom not only through standards, but also through publications.  The site also explains exactly what the 21st century classroom is.
